My view of choice is 'details' sorted by date modified. With XP this has always listed files first, followed by directories. In Win7 details view was originally displayed this way, but for some crazy reason or another if the view gets switched to another view such as icon, and then back to details, directories will always be listed first and files last. I can't make it go back to listing files first and then directories. Is this a bug yet to be corrected? Drivin me nutzo.

You need to learn more about hierarchy of files. In Explorer in Win 7, you can sort any way you want. Just go to a blank are of the display and right click. That will bive you the sort menu among other things.

Keep in mind that the default hierarchy is folders then files in those folders. The sort menu lets you make that ascending or descending.

It's not a bug - it works. :)

Sorting by ascending or descending only switches the listing from newest to oldest or oldest to newest...I'm looking for a way to switch it back to display files first, then directories while viewing a detail listing in a folder.

For example, this is what I'm getting:
2r3ctmw.jpg

And this is what I'd like (had to Photoshop):
51xzwj.jpg

Sorting by details actually made this happen for this folder, but it seems with certain folders, theres no way to get it back to list like this, they are stuck listing the directories first.

And now an update, I figured out why this is happening with certain folders. For some reason or another, the 'Date Modified' column is just replaced with 'Date'. If I right click the columns to add 'Date Modified' and remove 'Date', then sort descending, files are listed first and then directories. Why the 'Date Modified' column mysteriously gets replaced by 'Date', I do not know :D
