Why does Win2000 think it is a server on my LAN?

What makes you think that it thinks it is a server?

For the password problem, check out the FAQs, Im pretty sure (93.6553%) that is answered in one of them. If so, please include a link in your sig pointing to the FAQs 😉

It must be Win98 then. It says I don't have access to that server.

client server is more complicated than one machine is always a server another is always a client. The Win2k machine is providing a service (smb -aka file sharing) and is therefore a server. If you were on the Win2k machine pulling files off of the Win98 machine, the win98 machine would be a server.

To get the file sharing working you will probably have to use a username and password on the win98 machine that matches the username and password on the win2k machine, but check the FAQs, I could be wrong.

This is exactly what you are running into, in order to use a resource on the Win 2K machine you must authenticate on it.

And yes, please read the FAQ, I'm sure there is something in there. If not time to go to Google....

Neither did I, but it was probably the easiest way to get this guy to look at the FAQs 😉

AndyHui and the other FAQers have done a great job. I know AndyHui loves to see people using the FAQs. Especially after the amount of time he put into them. The least we can do is look at them once in a while 😉
