pretty much all manufacturers are using some form of Variable Valve Timing but all i ever hear is the honda fanboys spouting off how superior there engines are because of VTEC. i have yet to see people posting about Nissans VVL sytem , or toyotas VVTL-I. then they go off bashing domestics just because they use a diffrent acronym and don't feel the need to make a big deal out of it.

VTEC was the first one widely available on affordable cars. Plus it was a great way to reduce emissions and preserve at least some power.

EDIT: Most manufacturers have variable timing....VTEC also incorporates lift-control which isn't found on most other cars.

That and the fact that "VTEC" has only two syllables, a fact that makes it much easier and more appealing for the Honda ricer simpletons to parrot the term all the time.

Heavily marketed trademark + very stupid customers = Effective Hype

Because it provides for better gas mileage while still giving decent performance.

Thats what consumers want these days, better gas mileage.

Especially in 4-cylinder motors. So naturally, all manufacturs want it - and now they all have it.

Because VTEC is the most prevalant VVT system, Honda's been putting it in the more cars for a longer period of time. Also VTEC is more popular because of the bigger numbers Honda has been able to produce over the years (who else has been putting out 200+ N/A 4cyls?), VTEC made 100HP/Liter possible for the common man in the early 90's.

WINNAR!

it's a prevalent term b/c honda was successful in the late 80's to mid 90's with the tuner crowd selling the civics, integras, and preludes; all of which the fanboi's CAN afford.

What, in Japan? Toyota's 180HP 1.8 came to mind when I was writing this (the 3SG3 right?) but how many cars do they use that motor in, 2? Honda flooded their lineup with VTEC motors, that's why the name is so much more noticable
