Why does Vin Diesel, in F&F, say that Brian should be double-clutching?

Dom: What are you smiling about?
Brian: Dude, I almost had you!
Dom: You almost had me? You never had me! You never had your car! Granny shiftin', not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didnt blow the welds on the intake. Almost had me? Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block, and replace the piston rings you fried! Ask any racer, any real racer, it don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning.
Double-clutching would be slow and unnecessary in the cars used in this movie, since their transsmisions don't need it.

This is why fnf is such a notoriously bad movie for anyone who knows anything.

You're just now figuring out why people laugh at that line? You're a shame to the manual-driving community.

Believing anything you see in The Rice and the Ridiculous would be stupid and unnecessary.

Fixed your quote. :p

I think its mostly used in semis / large trucks that have a different gear box.

Yep. But I only use the clutch to start and stop.

You only double clutch if your tranny has no synchros or has really worn-out synchros.

No, double-clutching is when you hold the gas pedal with the toes of your right foot while using your heel on the clutch. It is used to match rpms to the gear you're shifting so that you can accelerate and pull out of a turn faster.

The line in the movie was just bunk. There's no point of ever double-clutching when you're racing in a straight line. Though, I didn't see the movie, I am assuming they raced in a straight line.

Dumbass lines like that remind me of movies like Hackers.. They said stupid sh!t like, "Let's use her computer. She's got a 40mhz modem." Lol.. I can't remember the exact line any more.. but it was stupid like that. I had a 40mhz modem once.. it downloaded at less than 56k, dropped a lot of packets, and disconnected a lot. Running a 33mhz pci modem at 40mhz doesn't always work that great. :p

that seems pointless

clutch in
shift into a gear
clutch out

works just fine and would be faster

thats not possible ;)

isnt that toe heel shifting you are talking about where your toe is on the gas, and heel on the break with left foot on the clutch using your right foots toes to match rpms when you downshift.

How do you have the gas pressed and the clutch pressed with the same foot, and not the brake?! Dbl clutching is the first definition in the thread.

For the record F&F was entertaining and so was F&F2, by god. I can't wait for #3 :D

Yeah, that basically hell toe shifting, but you use your foot on the break and gas at the same time. That is a very valid way to drive a manual.

Mike, brxndxn's post almost made me laugh Coke out my nose. How in the hell can one reach the clutch pedal with the heel of your right foot and toe the gas pedal........seems he forgot there's a BRAKE pedal in between them.

You're right................he's unwittingly describing, however clumbsy his description is, heel-and-toe shifting. But he forgot the brake pedal in it.

Double-clutching is exactly what was described above..........using the clutch twice per shift. Had to on non-synchroed transmissions........the Muncie RockCrusher 4spd. tranny comes to mind as one that HAD to be double-clutched. No synchros at all.

i was there at the actual shooting with my car and i told vin diesel that double clutching doesnt make sense and that a lot of what he was saying didnt make sense. they wouldnt reshoot the scene though since it was late on a friday and the actual stars were off the set on weekends and the stunt doubles would be doing the scenes during the weekend.
