Why does Verizon and Sprint still use CDMA?

Profit probably. It's a huge pain in the ass because I'm on a low income free phone type plan and am actively trying to get a phone that will work with it that wasn't made in the stone age. But due to the whole GSM/CDMA fiasco in addition to locked carriers, finding both specs, a modern OS for apps and a price I can afford is proving very challenging.

To add insult to injury, I hear Verizon especially uses a unique "kind" of CDMA that will ONLY work with their network. I'm guessing the intent is once you get a phone with them leaving for another carrier has additional hurdles. That makes you more likely to stay.
