Why does using my PCMCIA CF reader bring my computer to a halt?

Using my Sandisk PCMCIA reader to dump 1gb of uncompressed (NEF) images onto my laptop, not only takes 15-20 minutes, but slows the crap out of my computer while its transferring. Enough that it takes over a minute to load Firefox and the like.

Is this normal?

Get yourself either a Firewire or USB 2 reader/writer - it is less involved with the CPU and O/S. But, I use a Lexar PCMCIA C/F reader, and can off load 1 GB worth of digital images about as fast as my desktop with a USB 2 reader. With a laptop, you simply don't try and do anything else while that is going on. Go to the bathroom - take a break - have a cup of coffee and just let it be. 🙂
