Why does Tribunal run good and Morrowind terribly?

Sound's pretty weird eh? But it's true! Morrowind and it's original maps run like a crippled dog on my machine:

Athlon XP 1700+
ECS K7S5A Mainboard
512MB PC133
SB Live Value
Onboard Lan
ATI Radeon 8500LE 64MB
Realtek PCI NIC
Western Digital 40GB and 20GB 7200RPM ATA 100 hard disks
Running Windows XP Professional Service pack 1

And when I am in Mournhold the game runs like a dream?!?! What gives? Why do you think this is? It pauses all the time (not just when the loads are supposed to happen) in the Morrowind maps, and stutters, but the animation is at least 40fps constant in Mournhold....anywhere in Mournhold.

Some guy on another board mentioned that the Morrowind map is bigger, but everyone knows maps load in small chunks, and I can't imagine the map loading would be different.

My only theory is that by the time they got to the tribunal expansion, they had figured out some techniques to increase performance. Mournhold runs very well on my pc too, faster than the other towns. Or maybe there just isn't much detail there. My machine really slows when in Ebonheart, for example.

I think it's because in Tribunal the areas are relatively smaller than Morrowind.... my system stutters too in morrowind, but not in (unless i'm in a dungeon or inside buildings)

Yeah, I think there may be optimized code in Tribunal, but I thought someone might know for sure. For me the game stutters both indoors and out on Vvardenfell and like I said before I don't think its cuz of smaller maps unless they made smaller chunks load in Mournhold.

Here's my system:

Epox 8RDA Nforce2 board
2000+ XP (not O/C'ed)
512mb PC3200
GF4 4200 128mb 8x AGP
60gb 7200rpm Maxtor HD
Windows 2000

I have been wanting to pick up Morrowind since its prices are dropping. However, I have always been turned off by the numerous bugs and poor performance.

What kind of performance could I expect from my system? As of right now, I only plan on getting the original MW and not the expansion pack.

Your problems seem strange to me.

I'm on an nforce, 1600+, 512 PC2100, and a GF3 Ti200.

I have no problems at all in Morrowind. Nice n' smooth.

However, if I had to guess about the difference in performance, I would say it probably has to do with the map design. They probably figured out some ways to make the maps more efficiently, using less objects and such.

I have a very similar system as yours. Only I have a Radeon 7500. Morrowind runs fine for me. Maybe a couple of stutters here or there but nothing too annoying

BlueWeasel

That system is more than adequate

I'd imagine the performance would be good Blue Weasel, but with Morrowind you never know, cuz I have seen it run better on a lesser system than mine. Teh lesser system had a GeForce 256 SDR in it so maybe my problems are poor ATI optimization.
