Why does Torrent Software bog my Internet?

One thing I've never figured out is, why does torrent software cripple my internet connection? For example... I was using uTorrent recently to download some stuff, and at no point did the d/l speed ever top 120k. I have my uploads restricted to just 15k. My net connection can sustain about 700k. So with all that extra room... how come my internet crawls worse than dialup even if my torrent program is only using like 15% of my capability??? Is there a way to solve that?

Check your "Global maximum number of connections" in Preferences>BitTorrent

mines set at about 200.... higher numbers equal slow down.

connecting to mass number of people = ddos attack on your router. in short, the answer is your router can't handle it.

...reading OP FTW. He did limit the upstream.

Like others said, it's probably too many connections choking either the router, your NIC, or Windows.

It also doesn't help that a lot of BitTorrent clients are written like crap.
