Why does threats of boycotts make companies so timid?

Read an article this past week that Ford was going to stop advertising in Gay magazines because of a threat of a boycott by some conservative group. It's as if by trying to make a profit, they are believed to be pushing an agenda by these groups. WTF? All they are doing is advertising cars. Now I hear they are going to start advertising again. Good.

Be nice, or be somehwere else. If you cannot do the first option, we can enforce the second one.

I for one am glad to see Ford resume their advertising again. The AFA is so freaking homophobic that it makes me sick. It's nice to see a big multinational company like Ford that actually gets the concept of equality.

You don't have to quit your job to boycott a product. All you have to do is not buy it.

The boycott is the consumers most effective tool against companies. However, when you're a small group of hillbilly morons whose combined buying power is insignifigant and who have met large amounts of failure in your attempts to showhorn your backwards homophobic designs onto large corporations...you are really just pissing up a rope. Built Ford Tough: Built to Collapse to the whims of any resistance.

I think I'll keep my opinion of Ford drivers to myself. :p

No...seriously, if I had to hazard a guess I'd say the members of this association probably "buy american" exclusively, at least in regards to automobiles. Although...ford owns brands like volvo and jaguar, which I wouldn't want to piss of either.

Small group? I'd say those "queer-hating, gun-toting, tobacco-chewing" morons are probably one of Ford's largest demographics of buyers, next to companies and small-business owners.

Yeah, but gay people buy a lot of Expeditions and Excursions and Hummer H2s...hard to say who's the bigger market. Hillbillies tend to run their trucks into the ground.

I doubt demographics like that, who have a foolishly strong sense of brand loyalty are going to be running to the japanese or even GM any time soon. I think its an empty threat. And whether that demographic is large or not, I don't think its largely organized. While I'm sure many of them aren't big fans of homosexuals...I doubt many of them actually spend a lot of time down at the "get the gays" thinktank with these guys.
