Why can't people say, I live a comfortable middle class lifestyle, I'll be happy with what I have, so I'll spend my time working to better humanity?

it doesn't.. it revolves around it's axis.. which in turn allows it to revolve around the sun... which in turn revolves around the galactic core..

Two things; democracy and people being happy are not necessarily mutually exclusive. And also, what you wrote seems to say that having a booming economy is more important than everyone being happy?

IMO we think about money so we can ignore the important stuff.

Nope. I'm saying a booming economy is an indication that money's flowing. In our society of Materialists (including myself), when money flows it means people are buying, when people are buying, people are happy.

this is interesting, i have always thought that people's urge to buy comes from discontent.

I don't think he meant to say that a booming economy is more important than people being happy. I'm sure plenty of people today are happy...but to keep the economy going, we always need to want to be happier, heh.

The things you own, end up owning you.

You are not your job. You are not the money in your bank account. You are not the car you drive. You are not how much money is in your wallet. You are not your fvcking khakis. You are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

Because we tried revolving around other things and quite frankly it took too long to complete an orbit around Roseanne Barr.

The most obvious answer is because all of the essentials of life - food, clothing, shelter, etc. - cost money. So in order to acquire them, you obviously need money. For your example of a "comfortable middle class lifestyle" these days, you would need to acquire a not-inconsiderable amount of money to be able to afford the essentials of supporting such a lifestyle. Depending on your demographics, etc., that could equate to maybe $60-120,000 (US) a year. For example, here in Ohio, you could lead a very comfortable "middle class lifestyle" on $70-75K a year. In California or NYC, it's probably on the high end (?) of my scale listed.

It's not too hard, actually:

In this world, you need money to buy food, clothes, transportation, a house, etc., etc.

If you don't posses any money, you wouldn't be able to buy those things and since we slowly are replacing the natural environment (nature) by what we think the world should look like (towns, roads) and there don't grow any plants carrying fruit you can eat nor can you hunt deers or something else, you're forced to live from what other people give you (begging for food, receiving money from the government). You could start hunting and eating rats and dogs, of course, but that wouldn't be too smart due to health-issues and angry dog-owners ;)

conclusion: without money, you're forced to live from society's left-overs and compassion from others. Therefore, money is the key to a life in this world.

Money is just a representation of resources....so you could say the world revolves around resources.
