Why does the sound from my ps3 sound different than my 360?

I know I must have some option not setup right but both systems are going into a yamaha receiver via optical. One the setup screen for the audio on the ps3 I disabled the sound in hdmi since it is going to the tv and I enabled optical and selected every sound format available. the sound is way worse on the ps3 than on my 360

Odd, I've always used optical with my PS3 and games, DVD/blu-ray, Vudu all sound great. Netflix sounds fine but that's just stereo for most content.

What exactly are you using to compare them? DVD?

Also, for optical if you pick PCM instead of passthrough I think that's just stereo over SPDIF optical. It's HDMI that supports 6-channel PCM.

Depending on what type of receiver you have (HDMI "pass-through" vs. HDMI repeater/switch) it may be better to connect all your HD sources to the receiver via HDMI, and connect a single HDMI ouput from the receiver to your TV.

Yamaha htr5890 and it doesnt have hdmi. My 360 connects to my tv via component and I have optical going to the dvd input on my receiver. The ps3 is connected via hdmi to my tv and connected via optical to the cd optical input on my receiver.

You say you selected every sound format available, are you sure your receiver is able to decode those formats you selected???

maybe not but why does the 360 sound better is what i am wondering, they should at least sound the same shouldnt they?

What do you mean by sounds better though? They should sound the safe if the same sound codecs are used. What instances does it sound different? What are you doing on one that it sounds different on the other?

When doing your audio setup in the PS3 menu do NOT select all the audio formats available (Dolby 5.1, DTS, etc) because it specifically says that selecting formats your device isn't compatible with is bad and can even damage your audio equipment. This may not be the exact reason for your issue but it's something you should look out. It forces you to select 2 Linear stereo outputs by default and I just check the Dolby 5.1 box for my setup (Tritton 720 headsets).
