why does the $ sign go in front of the number amount?

Should we put the $ sign after the number amount?

  • yes

  • no

  • maybe, if we get to put punctuation at the start of a sentence. even trade

It's like putting the punctuation at the start of a sentence :colbert:

In some languages you do put the punctuation (or a variant of it) in front of the sentence. Spanish and '¿' is a good example.

I don't have a problem with the $ being in front of the dollar amount, as it allows to you know before reading the number that it will have a monetary value.

I'm pretty sure this also varies based on where you are, IE french (canadian french) tend to do it after the number. I also had a friend recently show me that some countries use a period instead of a comma for values, which I find completely retarded.

Yea, what screws me up is when other countries use commas differently in their numbers. Or phone numbers.. looks lie a shitty, multi-decimal version of scientific notation. That might just be the international phone number standard though

it denotes that the number you're looking at is in money form before you even get to the number.

14355 = oh a number
vs
$14355 = too expensive

How about "American" instead? Why not $10 439 682 230, the periods are unnecessary.

$50 looks right.

50$ looks wrong.

50% looks right

%50 looks wrong.

It's simple aesthetics.
