why does the "my computer" window take forever to open?

this is not on my own personal computer, it is on a friend's. whenever you double click on "my computer", first i would see the window flash by like this... then immediately after, it would blank out and give me the "busy" mouse pointer (see screenshot). it would stay on this blank screen for about a minute or two, then things come up normally. this also happens if i try to download something and try to browse to "my computer".

now, i have ran a virus scan, and it looks clean. i ran spyware removal programs (spybot and microsoft antispyware) and removed all that i could. previously, the computer suffered from horrible amounts of pop-up's, but now it is pop-up free. but the delay in opening "myt computer" persists through it all. i have done a repair installation of IE6 as well, but that did not help. any ideas of what might be causing this annoying delay in accessing "my computer"?

by the way, this is windowx xp home w/sp1.

Clean up the startup programs using hijackthis. There might be something slow that is taking windows forever to detect. Do you have other windows updates installed?

i am running windows updates as we speak. in the meanwhile, i am just wondering if anyone has stumbled upon a problem such as this. if it is as simple as a windows update, then i would be elated.

You may have some type of a drive that is having trouble reporting the proper information.
The OS is waiting for that information to become available or time out before continuing on.

I have the same problem. It wont let me open certain things or connect to internet for about a minute. I have no clue what the problem is.

agreed. try taking the cd's out of the cd drives, also if you have an external hard drive or sometihng, that could be a slow down too.

I didnt read the OP btw. lol

Just try disconnecting all your drives other than your OS hard drive. If that solves the problem, add them back in one by one.

This does sound like residue from malware. They commonly interfere with components that can remove them, such as, Control panel, explorer, IE, msconfig, and so on.

With friends machines I get them working as best I can, then try again the next time I'm over with more updated AVG, Adaware, cwsshredder, and Spybot. Often the newer versions clear out the problem.

To solve now, my best suggestion would be to post the Hijack This log in the excellent sticky near the top of the Software-Apps forum ... they catch a lot in there ... probably the best help anywhere.
