Why does the music in UT keep playing for about 15 seconds after I close the program?

This has been happening with my new system since day one. The game plays fine, but after you shut it down, you're at the desktop or any other app and the music is still playing? It shuts down after about 15 seconds. Any ideas, besides "your computer is possessed?"

<< Happens to me too...guess my machine is just slow! >>

It does it on my dual 1800+'s as well, so I don't think system speed is the problem.

<< time to upgrade Viper!! :D >>

I just put these CPUs in three months ago, prior to that it was dual 1200 TBirds.

My next upgrade will be to dual 2400+ TBreds, if they are supported in my beloved Tiger MP.

Really? :Q Well, that's comforting to me, that's for sure. :D Maybe it's a DDR-thing? Reaching here....b/c it didn't do this with my KT7-based system.

Well, I'm glad to see that it's happenign to lots of others as well. I don't feel so freaky now.

If it keeps playing 15 seconds on more than one machine I'd guess the game has "cached" the sound for 15 minutes "in advance" and after it's shut down it simply
stops caching music and plays what's left of it. may be related to either the sound card or the sound driver implementation (DirectX I guess?).

This is the typical type of thing that makes me slap myself every time I think I want an AMD/VIA system. These type of problems are much more common on AMD systems than Intel systems. That's why I went the P4 1.6A route on my latest system...

Pauli is right, I had an AMD comp and switched to intel till I see what the hammer can do, and that 15sec's of song after closing UT is gone.

Well, I can't say that I disagree with you. I went with AMD (and am very happy I did; my new system screams...) vs. a P4 due to price considerations vs. performance. But that's an old arguement and I dont' want to open up that can of worms. This prob doesn't happen on my PIII 733 PC133 rig.

The sound is just being buffered. No big deal. It very well could be the slow machines that don't have the 'problem' since they have to use all their juice to keep up with the game and don't have any left over for buffering!

I have the same problem with my 1.6a @1600mhz, 2133mhz or 2250mhz.
512MB of DDR too.
kinda weird it does it....

Cool. Now I feel much better! Ahem..."my system is so damn fast that it processess the sound before the program is even opened." :D Thanks bozo1.

I identified this problem a while back and have reported it to nVidia.

This is a driver issue. The problem does not occur if you use an earlier version of the Detonator drivers, specifically v21.83/21.85 (23.11 on up causes this). This bug occurs for the both GF3 and GF4 (and to a lesser extent, GF2's). Unfortunately for GF4 owners, reverting back to the v21.83 drivers is not an option as they do not support anything higher than a GF3 ti500.

For you folks who do not have a GF4, try the older driver as an experiment. You will find that this bug does not occur and that UT will actually run a bit faster under D3D.

Having it run about 15-30 seconds after closing the app is generally not a big deal, but it may cause a crash for some overclocked systems that are not running 100% in all areas.

Wow, Brian48; that's very interesting. And pretty darn nice of you to share that w/me (all of us!). Gee, that kinda sucks though; I get much better performance w/my plain-Jane GF3 w/the newer drivers than i did w/the old ones. :( Thanks again.

Ummm guys, I'm neither using an AMD processor (Celeron) nor DDR nor Geforce card (Intel integrated) and I have that problem...I think it's more of a software thing.

It could be. Which is why I sent the same email to Epic as well both nVidia and Visiontek. Unfortunately, I never heard back from any of them.

It's done that on EVERY computer I've ever played on. My main two rigs are as follows:

P3 1ghz@1.17 (intel BX chipset)
256MB PC133
AIW Radeon 32MB
Win2k pro

Athlon 850 (via chipset)
256MB PC133
GeForce 3 Ti200
Win98SE

Both boxes do this, and every other PC I've played on did it too. It's software, not hardware. (AMD rocks BTW!)

Um no...., I had a K6-2 that did it....

My bad, I thought it was probably an AMD/VIA thing. On the 4 Intel machines that I have seen UT run on (Celly 300a/450, P3/667, P3/933, P4 1.6A/2.1Ghz), I have not seen this problem. They have gone through several different video cards (Banshee, V3/3000, V5, GF2Ti, and Radeon 8500). My apologies to any AMD fan I may have insulted.

happened to me as well

733MHz P3 (overclocked 550) with a GF2 Ti Ultra and 512MB RAM

850MHz Celeron (overclocked 566) with a Viper 770 TNT2 Ultra and 256MB RAM

I turned the sound ALL the way down and now I play better without that annoying background music and I can now hear someone running around in a quiet room, and proceed to jump their azz.

Also no more music after you quit the game.
