I'm aware of the appeals process and all..but doesn't that process occur too with life sentence cases?

So let's just remove their court rights...

We can do like a playoff's thing... best of 5 trials.

I think they're limited in some places to 3 appeals. The whole point is an attempt to prevent an innocent person from being executed.

I would rather have 1 innocent person get executed than have 10 innocent people get executed.

Why does the death penalty cost more than life in prison?

Says who?

you mean to tell me that it costs more to kill a person than keep a person a live for the rest of his life. I find that very hard to beleive.

I think he means, "I would rather have 10 guilty men go free, than have one innocent man executed/convicted."

And I agree. It's the original basis of our justice system.

I remember from my government class that the statistic that it costs more to put a prisoner to death than life in prison is very very very rare. If a defendant loses a case and wants to appeal, he can appeal that he had an unjust trial, and then a committee will review is his appeal and only in something like 2% of cases does the committee agree to give him a new trial. And then in about 2% of thosecases are there actually reversals of the previous decision.

I doubt very much that this is what you wanted to say originally.
Maybe you could rephrase your thoughts?

You're much likely to get an appeal if you've been given a death sentence, both for the actual conviction, and for the sentence. Oh, and also trials for death sentenced are more elaborate too.

Says EVERYBODY. I thought this was common knowledge.

EDIT: here's another:

How the Death Penalty is Killing America

The January 5, 1997, Miami Herald estimated that the true cost of each execution is approximately $3.2 million, or roughly six times the cost of a life-imprisonment sentence.

I stand corrected. Didn't know.

Don't get me wrong, that is good news to me. I am against the death penalty due to its hypacritical nature.

the costs of dealth penalty would be lowered if they just hang em at high noon the next day, back in the old days

the problem is that minorities typically are given the death penalty disproportionately to whites

if you want a indisputable positive net gain for each death penalty, you could look at china's system... where they shoot the prisoner in the head and take his organs, whether he wanted to donate them or not

but we don't live in a police state. yet.

Cases where the defendant is sentanced to the death penalty are AUTOMATICALLY appealed.

i think we should keep the death penalty. you shouldn't lower the bar for justice just because it saves money.

I am only against the death penalty cause they use it too frequently and in light of modern DNA eveidence screw it up toooo often.
There are people, multiple murderes that should be put to death, but since they are such a minority of actual homicides I can live with leaving them in the can
til they expire

I wonder if you didn't do the crime but end up on death row or got life, in which case would you be more likely to be set free.
