Why does the area under an infected area get hard?

Is there something in it that makes it hard?

I got an infection from a small cut on my chest, but there is a hard pocket about the size of a quarter under it (even though the cut itself is like 1mm long)

Most likely it's just a pocket of pus. A warm compress should help to ease the "hard" feeling and tenderness. Just don't pick at it.

I had a cyst on my back once that blew up to the size of a golf ball under the skin... My friend pressed on it asking what it was, and it shot puss about 8 feet up onto the ceiling and all over the wall.... NASTY!

Difficult to say really.....could be a number of things. However it's usually something like this that makes it hard.

If you want it to stay hard, infected, and furthermore get crusty and yellowed ... sure.

If you absolutely must pick/squeeze it, put peroxide on it afterwards and watch it bubble. :Q
