During the Sony(read Fony) press conference Sony said, "...the Cell rivals Super Computers.", why do they have to lie this much?

So does anyone out there actually believe them? They deffinently like to lie to build up hype, so why listen to a word they say?

Oh and you gotta love the PS3 for it's abillty to have seven people playing at once, perfect for seven player split screen.

And i'm not a fanboy, I just hate Sony. :)

My desktop PC is probably faster than the Crays of the 80s. So they're not really lying, just misleading. ;)

it's part of sony's marketing scheme. they hype up their products with a bunch of lies to get everyone's interest, then t hey deliver something that is like 25% of what they promised, but everyone has already bought into the hype so they end up winning anyways. that's how it happened with the PS2.

fortunately it seems that most people know it happened to the PS2 and aren't buying into it for the PS3, and that the PS3 looks like it's not going to do nearly as well as the PS2 did. there are a handful of promises made by sony that have alrady been dismissed by the PS3, and its not even out yet.

I think that had something to do with Sony telling people it was powerful.

So you're saying that's what causes the disc read errors? ;)

That would be really good to promote X-Men 3. :)

Or it could make X-Men real... Dun Dun Duh!

HaHa! Yeah I forgot about those "reports" of Saddam buying a bunch of PS2's to guide missles. I remember thinking, that's gonna be one ghetto looking missile.

I'm waiting for the inevitable day when all the Cell powered PS3s link up to each other over the internet, develop self-awareness and then launch nuclear strikes to wipe out the human race.

Same reason Bose lies. Except Sony actually has some substances behind their product and Bose is just selling crap. They should just change the name to Bosh!t.

So if PS3s are going to start the Matrix, who will be The Architect? A Sony engineer, an IBM engineer, a Toshiba engineer, or one of the execs who greenlit the project?

If you're interested in the technical details, Arstechnica did a write up of the architecture that's fairly accessible to non-CE people.

And there is some merit behind it. If you really want to, you could make a super computer cluster using PS2s. I know someplace did it to help produce some kind of graphics or something. They linked them all together using the USB ports.
