Why does Skype video use so much CPU

Whenever I use webcam to transmit video of me when I am on a Skype call, my CPU usage (on E8400 ECed to 3.6GHz) goes up to 40%-50%. I am curious what about using a webcam on skype or a webcam in general requires both core to be working 40%-50%. Note, I am not saying that there is something wrong. Just curious what is actually happening. Thanks.

Prior to video being sent over the Internet to the other person, the video is encoded for transmission. The encoding process is what bumps up the CPU usage. The higher the resolution of the video, the more CPU usage you will see.

40% to 50% sounds like one core is fully-pegged. is that right? Or do you mean one core is at 40%? that sounds more reasonable. Use task manager and do tell.
