why does scsi work so much better than ide technology?

i can burn a cd and still play q3 on my friend's scsi rig w/o any noticable difference in game performance. however, doing the same on my ide system renders it unplayable. why is this?
can someone please explain?

SCSI has the controller chip built right onto the card, requiring very little CPU overhead and system resources.

IDE on the otherhand puts a heafty demand on the IDE channel and the system resources.

SCSI runs independent of what the rest of the system is doing.

It's not too technical, but you should get the idea.
