Why does screen not refresh

On occasion (but not always) when I empty the contents of the recycle bin on Windows 2000 computer, I will get the sound effect setup for the emptying function but the files in the recycle bin will not disappear from/be removed from the screen, i.e. the screen is not automatically refresh. Have to hit F5 to show recycle bin with NO files. I see this behavior on computers both at home and work. And I can't speak for the ones at work but mine at home have ALL of the Microsoft patches applied.

Why is this ?

 
have you tried resetting the icon properties for the Recycle Bin? Go into Desktop Properties-->Desktop-->Customise Desktop. I saw this kind of thing a lot on Windows 95/98 systems but not seen it before on anything more recent
