Why does ripping a badly scratched CD crash my computer?

I use WMP10 to rip cds in lossless format on my PC, but as the title states if the cd is badly scratched (usually around the edges where the final tracks are stored), then it will sit there at 57% or whatever, pause the system and force a restart.

Anyone else ever have this happen and whats going on?
Hopefully someone knows of a fix, all my hardware is pretty new and it never crashes any other time.

But i can duplicate the problem with the songs on given cds every single time. Cleaning the cd can sometimes fix it, but as said the scratches arent going anywhere.
Only fix i can think of is get one of those CD crack filler solutions.. but if theres a way to tell WMP to just "give up" on tracks scratched THAT bad..

edit- btw, if it pauses on those specific tracks, and i pop the cd out.. the system does recover and not crash. could it be the way WMP handles this?

Have you tried ripping the cd's with something else?

no, i've always liked wmp10, but i prob should try winamp.
i always used/like wmp10s lossless wma format. /shrug

any recommendations, the only other one i ever used was good old winamp.. but back in the day with winamp3 (? iirc.. the skinnable one), i lost interest cuz it was buggy and moved to wmp.
friend told me the new winamp is based on the older winamp that ran well. i tried it about 1 1/2yr ago and it just seemed like the first winamp..
i like winamps sound quality (seems the best to me at least)

d/l'd winamp lite, and played the song that was crashing the rip process in wmp10 and it played most of it through.. then it started clipping.. then the computer restarted..


any ideas??

These things can be fickle.

That sounds really wierd. Had a friend who had that happen too... I'll ask him.

I just updated my drives firmware to the latest (may 13th), and same result.

as i play the song, Ozzy's 'back on earth' from the greatest hits (last song on the CD, right where all the stratches are on the outside of the disc), it starts clipping and crashes the PC towards the end.

since it does it on WMP and winamp, looks like i'll have to go get one of those cd scratch fill kits.

its a shame cuz i never scratched the cds, my friends and brother would borrow them and bring them back that way.

I've had this same exact problem. I actually began by using EAC, and when that didn't work, I tried ripping to Windows Media Lossless via Media Player 10. Every time, the system stalled.

Although I don't know a solution to this problem, I can assure you that even if you prevent Windows from crashing, you'll never be able to rip the audio from the CD. Try looking for a WMAL file on Kazaa of whatever CD track(s) you're missing.
