Why does post count matter to some people?

I'm constantly being insulted over my post count, as though people are jealous or that it is something to be proud of?! It means nothing... Why are people so hung up over it, there are threads dedicated to increasing your post count?!

When I post in the nef thread, I usually post something other than just a few letters. Most of the time, there's some actual conversation going on in the nef thread. I tend to just post random thoughts, quick rants, wish everyone a good morning, etc, etc.
