Why does partition magic say "Cross linked files found" and just freeze on me?

Because it has probably run into cross linked files. They can lock up any program. Before running P/M . . . run ScanDisk or better yet, Norton Disk Doctor.

Scandisk will fix the crosslinks. Defragging is a good idea if you're shrinking or growing a partition. Copying a partition won't matter much with fragmentation.

Cross linked files are when two files pointers in the FAT are both pointing to the same cluster of the drive. The way Scandisk should fix it is to make two copies of the cluster(s) and assign one copy to each of the crosslinked files, then you'll be able to see which one it should have belonged to. (The other one will have lost whatever data it was supposed to have in that cluster.)
