why does our country (U.S.) complain about high gas prices?

Okay... first off... let me say that I'm 18 years old and I work about 20 hours a week with a pay of $6.50 an hour. I live in upstate New York where sales tax is 8%, it's one of the highest tax rates in the state of New York.

Gas prices are 1.70 + or - a few cents PER GALLON. I Don't have any problems filling the tank of my GMC Sierra, the Tank is a 38 gallon tank, so when it is empty, I usually drop about $40 into the tank just for gas. Now... I don't have problems paying for the gas... what is everyone elses problem? I heard in Canada... specifically the Toronto area that gas is about $7.00 a gallon... Why are we complaining? Just someone fill me in... as I said... I'm 18... I'm no politician (sp.).

Because we are spoiled, dammit! Other countries tax the hell out of their gas, much more so than is justified by the price of crude oil. Historically, we don't do that.

perhaps cause we are such a gas gussling nation. and it pains us to know that we fork over so much money for something that is not truelly needed.

Do you pay rent, utilities, car payments, insurance payments, student loan payments? When I have to drop an extra $5-7 dollars to fill my tank for whatever reason, I'm not going to be very happy.

Gas is $2.35US a gallon here.... BTW - Gas is about $2.60US a gallon in Toronto...not quite $7.00.

Some european countries pay that much though.

in toronto it is 72.7 cents per litre. im not sure what that is gallon wize.

*kat. <-- was happy to buy gas in toronto yesterday cuz it was cheaper than here, (cambridge).

pulse8, I Pay car payments and I pay for my insurance... it's not cheap.. did I mention that the Sierra I drive is a 1998 GMC sierra...? pay for it myself. Still have play money after the car payments, insurance payments and Gas.

lol.. when your gas prices starts going into teh $2.30 a gallon range like us here in teh Bay Area... you'll understand.

Statically speaking.. the United States are more dependent on Cars than other countries. Yes.. Canada's gas is more expensive.. but their city's public transportation and railway system is MUCH better than ours. Americans generally prefer to drive.

And also, we americans also prefers SUV for no reason other than to waste mroe gas!

U look at European nations their Gas prices are generally WAY more expensive than here, I mean up to about 10-20times more expensive, but then again. inner city in Europe have great transportation system (i.e. the paris subway/bus.. etc), and if u get out to the country side well.. the Euro rail sytem is so good that you don't even need to fly.

That's why we're b!tching.

have you ever been to Europe? All of their cars are like the equivalent to our volkswagon Rabbits or Ford festiva's, Do you know how many miles per gallon those little cars go...? you fill the tank once and that takes care of you for two months.

How in the world can you afford a 98 serria pick-up and insurance on $6.50 an hour at 20hrs a week. Something tells me that you still live with Mommy and Daddy. Once you move out and are independant you'll b!tch and moan about gas prices like everybody else.

If you're only concerned w/ a car payment, insurance, and gas, then you really haven't much room to talk.

When you're paying inflated natural gas prices, water, trash, electricity, phone, ad nauseum, then come back to us and tell us you don't mind the gas prices 🙂

Personally, it doesn't bother me much, but I can see why it would upset some. I fill my car up twice a month for ~$25 each time w/ 89 octane.

yeah, I still live with my parents... My father bought the truck, put a large downpayment on it, and then the company he worked for gave him a company vehicle... so I took the truck and took over the payments.

I'm not the issue... what I'm saying is... if we've got it so bad... how come other countries don't complain even more.... are we just a country of whiners?

I have a mortgage, two car payments, student loans, all utilities, etc... and I'm not bitching about gas.
WE AS A NATION ARE SPOILED! Quit whining and buy a more fuel efficient car, carpool, take public transportation if you have a problem.

Well, you're living here. How do you know these other countries aren't complaining as much if you're not there?

well, according to one analyst or whatever, high gas price is a good thing.
it prevents people from buying suv or sports car.
it prompts research of new energy source.
most importantly, better environment.

<< because it used to only be 1.10ish 2 years (or so) ago >>

Amazing how gas has nearly doubled, and Exxon-Mobil has record profits. Why are we bitching? Do you really think that the gas companies are playing fair here? If they were, where is the competition? Every gas station you go to is roughly the same price, and with record prifits being reported by the gas companies, there must be record margins. If there were true competition, one gas company would lower their prices by a nickel and sell 10X as much, forcing the next company to match that price. Why isn't that happening? There are all kinds of guesses out there: Reduced oil production, Clinton/Gore pushing prices of gas up to make alternative fuels more appealing, fixe fixing... The reduced oil production arguement doesn't hold much water - if the cost to produce goes up, then the selling price goes up accordingly. This wouldn't produce the kind of record profits the gas companies are making. No matter which arguement you subscibe to, we are getting SCREWED.
