Why does our country provide benefits for Marriage ?

I'm trying to understand why our nation provides benefits to married couples.

What is the rationale ?

Transfer of assets in case of death.
Eligibility for Social Security benefits once retirement age is reached.
Eligibility in health care benefits.
Power of attorney in health care situations.

It affords protection to a spouse who may not have worked during the course of the marriage. It also protects children of a marriage in the form of child support in the case of a divorce.

Those aren't reasons - those are benefits that are provided.
