Why does Netscape 4.75 for Linux look different than for Windows

I installed Mandrake 7.2 and have been playing around with it. I'm using Netscape 4.75 for HP-UX at work, and Netscape 4.xx for Windows at home. Both of these look 'normal' to me. Netscape for Linux looks weird. The colors and fonts are wrong, background colors are often way off (Yahoo typically has a white background, but in Linux Netscape it's grey). I see really strange artifacts on some pages - like this forum one where there are duplicated buttons, etc.

I guess I don't understand why Netscape for HP-UX would look great (read: normal) and Netscape for Linux would look weird (read: different).

Any insights?

Thanks

there are many problems with NS running on linux. The background color has to do with how the html is coded/NS renders. Background colors are assumed to be white by those coding in windows and usually not set because of it. I rahter like grey though. I'm currently using Mozilla 0.7 and it solves most of them for me.

I upgraded to Netscape 6.0 - which was a big pain to install - and I'm not sure that I like it. After 4 years of Netscape, I used to the way it 'feels'. Now they've gone and changed it on me... <sigh>

I'll try Mozilla next, I think. Thanks for the info, BOFH

Still fiddling around with Netscape 6.0 here...

I notice that it fixed almost every problem. I changed the default background from grey to white and it looks fine now. Dialog boxes seem to work, fonts are better. I still don't like the 'look and feel' though, so I think I'll head over to Mozilla.Org and download 0.7.

Are there any stability issues with Mozilla 0.7. Does it feel like pre-released software?

Thanks

Ok, I dl'd and installed Mozilla 0.7. I'll grant them one thing, they have the fastest server that I've ever seen on the Internet with my cable modem. I broke 280kB/s pulling from them.

I installed it, and it looks like Netscape 6.0, only worse. There's no line at the top for typing in an http address. The icons are bigger. The drop-downs are stranger. Is there a 'skin' that makes it look like Netscape 4.x? Am I running the wrong executable (ie. mozilla)? Is there some configuration thing that I didn't run?

Thanks for any advice/answers.

the 'classic' skin looks like NS 4.x sorta. go to edit>prefs>appearenc>themes for previews or just view>apply theme

No problem. The more people show up in server logs using Mozilla, the better it will be for all of us. Hopefully it'll mean more pages coded correctly and such, but in reality, probably just more accessable
