Because the movie is 2.33:1 ratio (theatre version) while your Widescreen is 1.77:1?

Could be
I thought the same thing when I bought my HDTV. The bars annoyed me, because I thought I was getting rid of them by getting a widescreen.

But then I learned that movies are in 2.33:1, and sometimes they modify it to 1.77:1 for DVD. Depends on the release, though.

The only HDTV that I know can stretch or change a fix/digital format is the Mitsu Gold series HDTV. I don't know if they have upgraded all of their TVs or not.

Matrix Reloaded is 2.35:1, so you WILL have black bars on a 16:9 display.
On the OTHER hand, Monster's Inc (for example) is 1.85:1, which will just about fill up a whole 16:9 display
and on the other OTHER hand, The Lion King (for example) is 1.66:1, which will cause black bars to show on the sides of a 16:9 display.

Blame the filmmakers for choosing the aspect ratios they do. Heck, Ben Hur has about a 2.70:1 ratio.
