Why does my Wireless Netgear MR814 router/USB Adapter suck for gaming?

I have a Netgear MR814 router (802.11b) and a few pc connected to it via regular Cat5 cable. I recently purchased a netgear USB adapter to use with one of my rigs. I always get a "very good" signal with almost all green bars lighting up on the status light. The internet and browsing my network works fine on the PC with the wireless adapter but the connection sucks for gaming. On battle.net playing Warcraft III/Starcraft I always lag out. The game runs fine but my connection isn't stable enough to last through an entire game.

Is it just my hardware or does all wireless network suck for online gaming?

Any help would be appreciated!
