Why does my Wii's DVD slot light up blue and stay like that?

What's it doing?

I'll turn my Wii of by using the power button on the Wiimote, it shuts off fine and will stay off for hours but at seemly random time, the DVD slot will light up blue and pulse at random time but the actual unit is still off, nothing being output to my TV or anything.

Is that normal? WTH is it doing?

Is it going to kill me?

It's pretty creepy to come out into my living room in the middle of the night to get a drink or something and see a blue pulsing color fill the room, feels like aliens are going to attack at any moment 😛

So it's downloading a message in the middle of the night then or something?

I do have my Wifi network configured on it.
 
Yea, if you just use the Wii's controller to turn it off, the power LED should be yellow, which is idle mode - in idle mode it stays connected to the internet. It's called Wii 24/7 or something.

The message is usually from Nintendo about a system update or something.
 
It's called WiiConnect24 and if I remember correctly there is an option for that light not to turn on but don't quote me on that.
 
It seems when I was first using the Wii, it would turn red when off but maybe I am not remembering it right. Now it turns yellow. I prefer my items like the PS2 and Wii to have no power going to them when off and since a light remains lit when they are plugged in but "off" I unplug them to make sure. Its annoying. But I figure less chance of a power surge or just something burning out.

You can change this. The reason it is yellow is because you changed the settings so that WiiConnect24 always remains on. Default is set to off but I like it on personally.
 
I love my Wii, but it should be mentioned that one of the very few hardware issues it has had stems from WiiConnect24. Apparently, while it is in "idle" mode but still using WC24, the system does not run its fans and can get very hot. This led to corrupt video output that has been experienced by quite a few people around the internet, so apparently the heat can damage the video card. I remember there were rumblings of a patch that would fix this and allow the fans to switch on occasionally, but I'm not sure what came of it.

I thought this was a rumor and fixes have been applied? I asked about this before because I was concerned and I got responses from people saying that they have run into problems even though they didn't leave WiiConnect24 on, and others who had problems while it was on, and then there were others who claimed they have left it on since Wii's first came out and never had an issue.

In the end, it sounded to me like the Wii had an issue but the reason was not isolated to this theory.
 
From what I've heard it was simply a bad batch of Wii GPUs that caused the problem. I can't offer any proof of that though. I also think they released a fix that lets the fan come on while in standby if the system gets too hot. I don't know if it was just a rumor or what.

I've had WiiConnect on since I got my Wii and haven't had any issues with it getting hot. I move it around a lot though so it usually isn't plugged in for more than a few days at a time.

When I first got the Wii I noticed that so I just hold the power button until it turns red so it's off and I don't have to worry about it. I have a launch Wii and have it on the RED LED when off cus I don't like it to have all that power running through it 24/7
