I have this 3Com 108Mb USB wireless NIC: http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/deta...ures&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CRUSB20075

and the 3COM 8250 Access Point:

I am using the USB Nic on the HTPC to stream videos from the server attached to the network. The entire network is gigabit.

One problem is that the USB nic keeps on dropping connection and affect the streaming. FOr most of the time, the streaming work work fine for a few minute and stop and I see the the connection status on the taskbar goes off. I've tried reinstalling drivers etc and nothing seems to work..... can someone please help me?

Powersave mode is also turned off in the NIC properties

... or an wireless PCI card with an external directional antenna pointed at the access point.

I have used 2 USB nics, one from Microsoft and other was a no name can't remember. Anyhow FOR EVER AND EVER it dropped... I could never download large files like 100Meg updates and patches... ever. I practically went mad changing settings, channels, protocols. I even thought that the USB NICS would be better since most have the USB connector and then have a cable with the antenna that you can place higher than most PCI nics which generally just have the card and then a little antenna sticking out.

Anyhow moral of the story was that I went out and got a Dlink 108G PCI card and instantly... i cannot stress that more.. instantly all my dropped connections went away. I mean i still get the occasional (once every 2 weeks) where my comp just looses connection but that seems more to do with my router. Anyhow try that and make sure to get a nice antenna to go with that is directional and has a gain.
