Why does my stock muffler sound like a wannabe ricer fart pipe?

It makes a pffft pffft sound that sounds like it has a hole in it, but I checked and it's fine.
So why does it sound louder than normal (started happening not too long ago).

But other than noise, all else has remained the same (performance, gas mileage, etc., AFAIK).
Except it smells a little, how do I say... like it'll have problems passing emissions.

My car is a '95 Sentra (GA16DE), 60k miles, totally stock - performance wise ;) no aftermarket cat or exhaust.
Bringing it in for the 60k mile service tomorrow, but I would like to hear some opinions before the mechanic starts giving me BS.

If you have a leak anywhere in your exhaust system (not only the muffler) you will hear that type of sound.

Chech the connection between the exhaust manifold and where it dumps into the tailpipe, there is usually a donut shaped gasket in there and if the system leaks it is usually there.

Kind of a right of passage...moma's boy gets the parents hand-me-down Jap family car and the first thing they want to do is put a berritone fart pipe mufler on it and screw up the suspension by lowering the thing an inch off the pavement. Everytime they hit a bump in the road sparks fly off the fart pip muffler. Cop's love pulling that junk over and finding a crack pipe or a blunt roach in the tray..nice easy bust...kills time. The city collect's big time off the tickets and court action..cop looks good. Rice rider's cryin. Funny thing is..rice rider will go thru this a half dozzen times. The cop will actually go to work looking forward to finding rice boy especialy on friday nights.

And your Nissan would get owned by a Camaro/Firebird. :D

psteng19 - the inside of the muffler is probably rusting/corroding out.

Do you have a reliable source with 0-60 and E.T.'s for one of those? Just curious.

i'll take on a camaro and a hemicuda at the same time and work them both. to make it fair, i'll even stay in reverse.
my specV pushes 0-60 in 7 flat. :)

psteng-- does it sound cool? and if its not really hindering performance, why mess with it? cool sounding mufflers rocks. You could top it off with some cool stickers.

Umm..no offense, but a LS1 F-body runs 0-60 in just over 5 seconds (~5.1 was the number I saw for a Formula WS6).

:p
7 < 5.1

okay.. just in case you thougth i was being serious-- the se-r is a fast car.. not that fast though. And while it might not actually take out a camaro- with a few mod's i've seen them keep up with them and mustang gt's.

i will take out any riced up civic's though. :)

Oh, ok, I couldn't tell if you were kidding or not. Never underestimate the power of emoticons.

7 flat is pretty quick compared to most sedans. Just don't go up against a Grand Prix GTP. :p;)

dunno about a GTP-- what kind of numbers does that push? (and isnt it like a 6cylinder / turbochargerd engine?)
I like when people think their brand new celica's and eclipses are faster than my se-r specV. I'll be the first to admit that i suck at driving stick, but they still dont stand a chance. I'm not big on racing though, becuase i kinda want to keep my car in one piece. :)

Yeah, the GTP has a 3.8L supercharged V6. Runs 0-60 in the mid 6's if memory serves.

I don't really race a lot either - just when some moron in a riced out POS with neon lights and a loud stereo thinks he's cool. Then I stand on it (V8's are fun).

*note to self- buy neon lights* ;)
hehe.. if i'm ever in the area, i'll make sure to look for you.. we'll settle this once and for all.

and while we're on this subject (and takingn over psteng's thread) the GTP's are nice cars, as far as the engine goes-- but is pontiac ever going to redo the body style, i really think they make some ugly cars.

of course- i'm not a big fan of your f-body camaro's and firebirds either. Give my my little rice rockets any day. (and 30+ mpg :))

Umm, I know the Eclipse won't do much, but I know the Celica GT-S has 5 more HP, a 6 speed, and is probably a little lighter too...I think it's a very good comparison, and I'm sure one could take you out easily. (No offense to your car or anything, I think the Spec V is cool)

genocide, i'll have to look up the numbers, but i'm pretty sure as far as weight goes- they're pretyt close. And my spec V is a 6spd also. It would be a close race-- might just come down to whoever is the better driver.

I don't mind the body style on the Grand Prix's that much. The Firebird body's are what I don't really like. I think they forgot that it's okay to have a straight line once in a while in a design. I don't mind "rice rockets" - reasonably fast and good mileage. Just when people rice them out and think they're faster than they are. I just really like F-body's (Firebird's really - mine's a 3rd gen Formula).
