Why does my SB Live! Value have a Digital Out connector???

Hi guys,

Just bought a new SB Live! Value card, and it has 5 connectors: 2 outputs, 1 mic, 1 line-in, and 1 DIGITAL OUT (yellow connector). Is that normal? I heard that the Value don't have a Digital out connector normally... please help.

all sblive's have digital out's. the most common use is to convert the output over to a single wire generic "RCA" cable, which would feed the coaxial digital input on your home stereo reciever. But of course, you'd need to have a receiver with coaxial ditial inputs (most home theater receievers do). basically, it's like hooking your speaker outs up to your receiver, but instead you are using a digital signal, and therefore get much better sound quality. you can convert the sblive! digital out over to RCA using a simple 1/8inch (may be 1/32nd) male to RCA female converter at Radio Shack.

Well, I knew normal Live! had the Digital out, but I was told that the Value! didn't had them... anyway 🙂
I bought the FPS2000 speakers too, they'll arrive in a few days. Will I be able to plug them in that Digital out, since those are digital speakers?

Just looked at the Live! Value pdf file fomr creative labs. Seems like a standard Value DON'T have a digital out connector, as it only have 4 connectors. Mine have 5. WTF?

thank god that who ever you bought it from gave you the wrong card.. enjoy.

by teh way does it have an S/PDIF connection on teh inside, near the audio input/aux/etc etc.

cause you might have got a OEM live instead of OEM live value

Hey, that's great 🙂

Can anyone confirm that I didn't get a Value! card?

The_good_guy: don't seem to have such a thing... There's connectors for TAD, CD_IN and AUX_IN.

I think the new SB Live! Values do come with digital out. I don't have proof of this but I have seen many people in For Sale/For Trade Forums looking to buy/sell SB Live! Value cards with digital out. Go look for yourselves. Do a search for: 'Live Value' in the For Sale forums. You'll find many many posts.

Will I be able to use that digital out for my new FPS2000 speakers? I bought 'em thinking that I would use them with the analog connectors, even if they are capable of digital, but using them with that digital connector would be cool 🙂

SB Live! Value's have had a digital out for almost an entire year. I got mine at the end of last November. Anything that says otherwise is simply outdated. When they switched over to having the Platinum, Mp3 and X-Gamer all the SB Live! cards started using the same card, meaning that all of them have digital out (with the exception of certain odd OEM cards).

The first SB Live! Value cards didn't have digital-out (these were mostly the cards manufactured late '98 through mid '99). The newer Values, in both OEM and retail (X-Gamer, MP3+) forms have that yellow digital out. Unfortunately, since it's not an industry-standard SPDIF out, it tends to be troublesome when you're trying to output a true bitstream signal for Dolby Digital or dts. I no longer have to deal with this problem anymore, now that I have a set-top DVD player that connects very easily to my receiver.
