The plastic bottle will slowly deteriorate and maybe contaminate the water more than what is considered normal. :hmm:

those plastic bottles are gas permeable. in your house, it's the air you're breathing anyway, so that's probably not a big deal. an unopened coke in a plastic bottle will eventually go flat, though.
 
Same reason there is braille on drive-up ATMs. Same reason the pope shits in the woods. Same reason uh-ohs magically shows up in any thread that involves a young Japanese girl of indeterminate age.
 
I was told that certain state(s?) requires all food products to be labeled with a best by date (New Jersey comes to mind, but I'm not positive) and it's just easier to put dates on everything vs. printing separate labels for one particular state. This was in regards to bottled water when I asked.
 
as far as things like bottled water goes, it's usually more due till when the plastics break down. after a year, the plastic ploymers can begin to break down. you don't want to drink that.

if you keep the salt in a neutral container with no humidity, there is no reason it shouldn't last "forever".
