why does my PC lag even though i have 512MB of Ram???

This doesn't seem right to me. My PC sometimes lags when i watch a DVD video, burning a CD, doing some intense video editing, etc.. I could'nt find a reason why it lags. I have half gig of memory for crying out loud!

A full list of your system specs would be helpful. Also any other programs running under your task manager. Like SaveNow.exe and Xupiter.exe .

virus? nah, i don't think that is the case. I think it has to do with my piece of shlt intergrated 4mb Intel video card. hmm..

?

He's tellin you that's your problem. An integrated 4mb intel graphics card isn't going to cut it for heavy duty graphics apps such as current games or DVD video. Even a cheap 32 or 64 meg video card will help, anything but those relatively worthless build in 4megs! 🙂

cheers!

[EDIT] slow drive would indeed matter as well for the editing. Shouldn't affect DVD playback but anything that uses that HD will be affected by how fast data can be written to and read from the HD.

Actually, HD speed does have a lot to do with how responsive your system is. A failing or old hard drive will cause your system to be really slow in loading any sort of application. If you don't have a 7200rpm or faster drive, you might want to invest in one. And yes, that video subsystem is probably going to slow things down too, especially in an OS like Windows XP.

As others have said, a full system spec list would be helpful, including what OS you are running. Has the system always been so laggy or is this a recent development?

Your #1 problem as far as DVD playback and other graphics stuff is your video card (or lack thereof).
Your #2 problem is PROBABLY your hard drive, but its impossible to say since you have not listed your full system specifications.

A computer is the sum of ALL of its components, including the hard drive, motherboard (which encompasses all of the BUS'es like AGP, PCI and System), Processor, RAM, Video Card, etc.

And 512MB of PC100 will still be slow, relatively speaking. So it all depends upon your components. Whcih you need to list.

That's the culprit right there...

well if you don't want your pc to lag, you'll need to upgrade your vid card.

You need a new graphics card.

It lag's occasionally, not all the time.

Windows XP
Celeron 1.30 GHz (w/256KB L2 cache)
512 PC133 SD
don't know what kinda HD it is.
Intel intergrated 4MB video card.
Motherboard = generic. Don't even have an AGP slot. <---pisses me off

hahah so true, what a peice of crap !!!

If I was to build a pc with lag in mind this would be the system to build. :disgust:

I agree...everything sucks....and now we all know what the problem is....YOUR POS CELERON!

DVD Playback:

There is a lot of decoding that must be done and its done via hardware which means a CPU is required. You have no decent videocard so your processor must handle the load. Your processor is not really good at serious number crunching, thus your computer lags.

Intensive Video Editing:

Your computer is lacking in ALL respects to handle this type of workload.

1.Your CPU has very limited cache and therefore must constantly be fetching new data from RAM into its pathetically small cache.
2.You have no decent videocard at all. Video Editing - No video card. See a problem?
3.Your memory subsystem is slow by today's standards and its todays standards that says you can do video editing on a PC (at the time when your computer was remotely cuting edge, the thought of video editing on a PC was just that, a thought).
4.Your I/O subsystem is slow as well. A video file is a HUGE file that takes a tremendous ammount of bandwidth, something your current I/O system is unable to handle.
5.Your ammount of memory is nice, but unfortunately, its just as slow as the rest of your system.

You really need a computer upgrade if you wish to do video editing.

Addding a videocard (even a cheap PCI 64MB card) should help free up some things for DVD playback.
