Why does my network go to hell when my PS3 is turned on?

Kev

It's not even downloading anything... but whenever it is just on, my router starts losing connection, AIM signs on and off, my computer loses connection... all randomly. i don't get it

Not a mod, but in this case maybe cross posting in networking forum might help.

First step would be to update your router's firmware.
Second step would to make sure you're not using homemade cables and try storebought cables. And don't pay a dime over 8 bucks for a category rated patch cable.

It works fine with my 360 turned on... The PS3 is wired to the router with a store bought ethernet cable.

I have issues with it too. When I try to connect to the internet, it kills my connectivity for every other device for about a minute.

It works fine with my PS3. I don't think Folding@Home would cause poor network performance, but that's an idea. If you're not doing anything on the network, then there's no reason for the network to run slow when your PS3 is on.

Try putting the PS3 in the DMZ?

This is not how you do network troubleshooting. Just because it works fine on your 360 doesn't mean you don't have a cabling problem.

You could have a cabling problem, you could have a configuration problem, you can have any number of things going on but "well, it works with my 360" is nowhere near networking trouble shooting. You CAN'T apply learned troubleshooting techniques to networking. You CANNOT use process of elimination.

MUCH more information on EXACTLY what is plugged into what and with what cables is needed.

correct, however; "I dunno, it works fine for me." is in fact a perfectly reasonable answer for us to give to you! strange how that works... eh?

Certain routers are known to have issues with the PS3. Only manually entering every setting or using custom firmware will fix it.

Networking issues are always a good time. Do you have anything on your network set up with a static IP? Maybe the PS3 is causing an IP conflict? Or as mentioned above, cabling could definitely be an issue.

Well, I ended up updating the firmware for the router and that seemed to fix it.

What an uninteresting solution...

yes

That's the problematic router I was talking about before. EVERYBODY who owns one will end up having a PS3 issue with it sooner or later.

Here is the latest thread on NeoGAF about it. I ended up just getting rid of the router altogether and going for something else because the custom firmware would have been too gimped.

Well I have version 6 of the router and after updating to firmware 1.02.5 everything has been peachy..
