Why does my modem do this......

I've always wanted to ask this question.....Why does my 56k modem connection become unstable when someone picks up a phone on the same line as the modem? I can really feel a difference in the connection when this happens, it usually pauses for a lengthy amount of time, and will keep pausing periodically for a few minutes, and than it will go back to normal. Sometimes the modem even disconnects when someone picks up the phone. It really is annoying, and I was quite surprised when I first found this out. Can anyone give me a logical explanation why picking up the phone would restrict my modem's performance drastically?

This static doesn't produce any long term damage to the modem does it? And what does UBER mean? Thanks for the reply.

Actually I dont know for sure why it does this. I know it does this on all modems. Somehow it degrades the signal, and your modem has trouble communicating with the server.

No damage, it just cuts you off.

Uber means um.. uber. Like super duper.
