Why does my LOTR DVD have black bars at the top and bottom???

Dude, that's one of the advantages of building a projector. The light source is usually easily, and cheaply, replaced. And you can choose between many different kinds of bulbs depending on the balance you want between brightness, heat, and luminosity.
