why does my gf2 tv out suck?

im using an elsa gladiac geforce2 gts with the video module and when I do tv out it looks like it is running 256 colors (or less?). it looks crappy on everything I do... any time there should be a smooth transition between colors I see a bunch of jagged lines between each different color

its not a problem with my individual card, my friend had the same card and his did it too.... my brother had a gf2 from another manufacturer and it looked like crap too

anyone know what is going on?

TV-out ALWAYS sucks. Don't expect to read any text. Remember, the refresh rate is only 60Hz and even though the max rez is usually 800X600, the TV doesn't display even half that much data on the screen. Even when watching DVD's, the output is much worse than the cheapest ($50) stand-alone DVD player (*cough*APEX*cough*).

the only good way to get pc on a tv is if an HDTV had a vga or dvi port. maybe a component video would work.

i think its your tv that sucks (more than the tv-out itself), regular analog tvs display at 640x4something (i think), 1024x768 looks silly at that res

thanks for the input so far, but I dont think I made myself clear in the original post.... I know that the picture will be blurry, that is fine

the COLORS suck... the display always looks like it is running in 256 colors no matter what I set it to. not all tv out does this, my friend's gainward geforce3 looks great on the tv, so does my brother's gainward geforce4 ti4600

blurry=tvs are always blurry, I understand. I dont care if I can read text or not
colors=its an analog signal, the number of colors is (should be) unlimited

I have one of my computers hooked to a 36" HDTV (RCA MM36110) that actually has a 15-pin DIN computer monitor input, and text is still kind of blurry. I can surf the net and do e-mail with it, but it's mostly for playin games (although the max res is still 800X600).

I don't know what to tell you about your "256 color" problem. What kind of TV's are your friend and brother using? Are you using the S-video cable (the round DIN-type plug) or something worse, like composite video (the single yellow RCA-type plug) or an RF-convertor (coax "cable TV" type screw-on connector)?

I have tried it on many TV's hoping that was the problem... they ranged from a 15 year old RCA 25 inch to a 4 year old sony trinitron 32" to a brand new sony wega 32".
I am using a composite connector on everything, but so were my friend and brother.

keep the suggestions coming!

You are just too used to a monitor, I don't even try to read Email and stuff on my TV OUT. You should really just stick to a monitor because TV OUT is usually blurry. Have you tried turning up your colors? Maybe that is the problem... having it set on 256 colors its probably going to look bad.

wow.. some people really can't read😉
heheh
anyways you know that the pic is going to be blurry. no problem.
but the color problem you're having is by no means normal.
I have an old Voodoo3 3500TV that I use the TV out on.. and although blurry I get 800x600 with 16bit color and games etc look fine.
It could be the connection to the TV that you are using. I don't know your setup but try S-Video over Composite first. Usu. a much better picture/connection. Might want to try a different cable too(perhaps that one has a short?)
Also you might want to try different drivers.

I know that all these things are pretty basic and all but I just wanted you to know that I did read your post.. and that it's not normal.

its not a bad cable, its been doing this since I got the card and I have tried many many different cables... I will try to get my hands on an s-video cable though

its strange that no one has heard of this problem. several people I know have had the same problem and we all pretty much just stopped using tv out altogether. I may try run tv out from this system and do video capture on another so I can post a screenshot of what the display looks like

Yeah, when I had the card, I at least tried S Video on my WEGA and my newer Panasonic and it still sucked, the same S video cable I use for my DVD player and that works just fine. So, I mean, we can sit and jab all day about cable quality or composite v svideo or how crappy your TV is.... its not gonna help. It's good to suggest, but we have tried everything that one would think to cause a bad picture.

What we need to know is if its a driver issue, a physical card issue, a "perfect setting" issue, or what?

I guess I can add this -- I have tried tons driver sets ranging from the oldest elsa drivers to the newest elsa's to the newest detonators... I have even tried it under 3 different OS's -- win98se, win2k, and winxp

While nvidia tv out has always been poor, it shouldn't be that bad.
My DVDs run very good on tvout, so its definitely a problem on your end.

I'm taking a guess here.. but how do you have you cables set up? This could very well more of an issue with where you are pluging in your cables, more than drivers or cards.

have you been reading the posts? I have tried many different cables, many different tv's, s-video and composite... I dont think it is an issue of poor connection

<< ok, now lets get back to MY PROBLEM... please read my post carefully and in full before posting >>

it is not a connection problem. I am connecting it straight to the tv. I have tried many different cables and many different tvs. it is a problem with the card.
