why does my dvd drive rip dvd's so slowly?

my NEC 3500AG drive doesn't ever rip DVDs with DVD decrypter at faster than about 3x, maybe 4x occasionally.
my 3550A, on a very similar computer, will rip them at 8x, 9x... and higher. the same DVDs too.
i haven't noticed any other differences, say with write speeds or anything... just these read speeds.
anyone know what's going on? i seem to remember hearing about a problem with the 3500, but i haven't found anything on it anywhere so far.

maybe the firmware limits the rip speed,try looking for a modded firmware...

yup use hacked firmware. riplock = copy protection=nerfed rip speed
i ues a 2500a with hacked firmware.

3500 maxed out at 7x DL with riplock removed. 3550 is not riplocked and can hit 11x.

well 7x is a lot better than 3...
thanks guys didn't know that there was a copy protection built in!
i'll look around some forums for a good firmware, unless anyone has any particular suggestions... ?

What is riplock!? If rip lock was working, wouldn't it be not letting you rip it at all?

Riplock is a read-speed limitation defined in the firmware. It allows normal DVD playback but makes ripping DVDs painfully slow.

riplock doesnt stop - it only discourages

well flashed it with TDB 2.1A firmware... still doesn't go that fast, like maybe 6, but, a lot better. at least it's no longer faster to rip it on my other pc, then transfer the whole dvd over wireless

Use SiSoftSandra to see what transfer mode the drive is operating in
