Why does my dog like to sleep DIRECTLY beneath me?

Dogs like contact so usually sleep around your feet to know you are there, kind of like security blanket to them. :)

I don't think it's so much a security blanket, but rather that dogs are pack animals by nature. Aphex is his dog's pack, and so they naturally want to sleep near, around, ontop, below what ever their pack.

I don't think it's so much a security blanket, but rather that dogs are pack animals by nature. Aphex is his dog's pack, and so they naturally want to sleep near, around, ontop, below what ever their pack.
