Why does my computer not recognize my RAM?

I am trying to upgrade my computer from 128MB to add another 256MB chip. I have to slots on my motherboard for RAM, one is occupied by the 128chip and the other was empty. I put the 256 chip in the empty slot but the computer did not recognize it. I then took the 128 chip and put the 256 chip in its place. My computer did not ever boot up. I thought that maybe it was a bad chip, so I sent it back to the company and they sent me a new chip. The same thing happens though with my new chip. Is it possible that the new chip is bad too or is there something that i'm not doing right? help!

This link takes you to the HP webpage and gives the specifications of my machine:

Test the memory in a friends system or take it to the local comp shop for testing. If they can get it to boot then get them to run MemTest86 on it.

Lippa,

some motherboards/chipsets won't accept 256MB RAM modules or the modules with unsupported chip configuration/memory path width etc... I had this problem with 3 older PC's so far, 2 had i440BX based boards, one was i815 based... they were supposed to accept 256MB sticks, but only certain configurations...

If your PC can't recognize full size of the RAM, or won't recognize it at all, there is a good chance that your motherboard won't support that RAM module (particularly if you trying more then one stick and they all fail)
