Why does my comp freeze up--then not re-boot?!

I'll get a "general protection fault" crap, NOTHING will work, not even "ctrl-alt-del", so I'll turn it off. When I turn it back on, the red light on my HP Pavilion will stay on and nothing happens. I'll have to turn it back off for 10 min or so, before it will work again. Why, and wjat can I do?
Any help is appreciated...
