why does my car sputter then die after being turned on?

I have a 2003 mazda protege hatchback. I drove it for a while then parked it for a bit now when i start it it sputters a bit and it rumbles a bit then dies. It turns over fine then when i take my foot off the gas pedal to keep it alive it sputters then dies need help.
 
Sounds like a fueling or idle air/EGR problem.

When was the last time you cleaned out the idle air controller and/or the EGR bits?
 
If its anything like my old Neon RT than its an EGR issue. It's fun losing power mid acceleration in an intersection and having to pump the gas praying that it finally pickups instead of stalling out.
