It appears to happen more often when he wants me to work weekends or longer hours. Coincidence?

Colloquialism?

A lot of people say 'sir' in passing. Like 'man' or 'dude' or something. Yessir, I've heard it.

What is the world coming to when people complain about being addressed in a respectful and professional manner?

What would you rather he say? "Get back to work you fucking worthless maggot! Oh, and you better get those reports done by sundown or your ass is fired. Also, come in on Saturday you little bitch!"

It's because your boss WANTS to SHOW
that you are R E S P E C T E D

Probably because if you feel respected or needed, you're more likely to do weekends or longer hours happily (or whatever emotion you normally feel about work).
