Why does my Athlon64 3000+ Run at 58C? Abnormal

Hi folks.

I am running an Athlon64 3000+ with MSI K8T Neo Platinum Motherboard. I am using the retail heatsink, one exhaust fan blow out of the case from the back, and one intake fan blowing air into the case from the front. I have opened up the side of my case.

The motherboard monitor reports CPU temp as 57 when I am doing light work such as browsing and listening to music. It reports the case temperature as 44.

Does this sound normal?

I think the heatsink is fastened properly, it is pretty secure. The fans are blowing in the right direction, and the temp is still really high, EVEN with the case side taken off.

Any ideas?

That board misreports temps on the high side so don't worry, it's not that high. I think I read the latest bios fixes it too.

Where can I go about updating my bios? Surely the temperature can't be off by 10C? Or can it?

Thanks!

It can be and probably is off by that much or more. Use live update 3 since you sound like you haven't flashed one before click me BTW, don't listen to those who tell horror stories about windows flashing becasue for every one of those I can dig up 10 bad old fashioned method nightmares ;) Just make sure everything is@stock speed and that you follow the directions.

I have just flashed my bios using the liveupdate link you sent me, thanks!

Unfortunately, the temperature still reads 57C :-(... Any other suggestions?

I don't want to decrease the life of my processor if it really is running this hot. I can see no reason why it would be doing this, other than a reporting error. Is there any way around it?

Thanks again

A Bios update resolving the Temp issue has not been released via "Live update". I believe there is a "Beta" bios on the MSI forums but user beware.

My temps show in the low 60's on this board. You can either get a external temp monitor or have to wait for an offical BIOS release resolving the issue unfortunately.
