Why does my 600 2-2-2 run slower when i OC it to 800 3-3-3

Does the CAS make that much of a difference? I noticed a slowdown after overclocking, before applications would start right after i clicked them, but now it'll hang a while before finally kicking off...

If it is the CAS I can just get some pc133 2-2-2 ram to fix it right? my local store selling pc133 64strips for only $30 😀
 
I don't think that the CAS memory settings are your problem. What is happening speed wise to your PCI bus when you overclock ??

An Overclocked PCI bus accessing your hard-drive, doesn't always fail hard. Sometimes the HD works but slower due to error retries.

An option would be to set you cpu speed back to 600 222 do some test, then leave the cpu speed alone but slow the memory to 333. This will show you the effects of 333 on your system.
 
There is definitely something wrong there!

800 should be a lot faster than 600 regardless of CAS latencies.

Why don't you try bumping up the speed from 600 gradually, and see at which speed it begins to show problems?

It could very well be your PCI clock, which should be a 1/4 divider for 133 FSB.
 
I can only go from 100 to 133, anything in between screws up my hdd and everytime i boot my registry gets corrupted and i have to restart over and over till i change it to either 100 or 133
 
Sounds like your motherboard isn't very overclock friendly. Might I suggest one of the ASUS P3V4X or CUV4X.

I have Infineon RAM which is CAS2 capable at up 142mhz, and I've compared it running at CAS3 @ 133mhz and CAS2 @ 133mhz. The difference is extremely negligible. For example, a Q3A timedemo which was 150 at CAS3, is 151 at CAS2; that's a difference of less than 1%.

I've had similar problems when taking hardware to its maximum....try taking it down a little, and benchmark it again...

stressing components to their max. often results in errata, causing slowdowns...push your cpu, but not to its max.
 
Does you BIOS have anywhere of showing/setting PCI divider?

I have an idea it might be your hard drive playing up.

Do you have Sisoft Sandra? That should tell you your what speed your PCI is running at if not. If your mobo supports 1/4 divider than at 133 FSB your PCI will be in spec (33Mhz), otherwise you could be running it as high as 44Mhz!!

Of course, you are running PC-100 memory too, which could be causing instability as you are running it way over its rated speed.

You might want to try "real" PC-133 RAM.
 
Yes, 44Mhz PCI bus is very bad. 37.5 is considered the safe max, although hardcore overclockers go higher...You're in danger of fooking up your hard disk with a PCI bus that high. I know, it's happened to me a couple of times 🙁

Does that board not have a 1/4 divider then?
 
CAS can make a hell of a difference, but something often overlooked is running asynchronously. When doing soo the 2 buses actually have to get a clk cycle lined up to transfer, which might be the problem with the 800 speed as well. I bet it's the cas latency though.
 
you are comparing RAM at 100 MHz to RAM at 133 MHz. latency aside, duh!

latencies do matter, but 133MHz compared to 100MHz is kinda, duh!

of course having your processor at 200 MHz faster does help ;-P (depending on the benchmark).

having the latency at 2 is not a whole world of a difference than at 3. there is a difference, but it's not like scsi vs ide (heated debates still go on ;-))
