I think it is something besides the alcohol.
Scope does not hurt, but Listerine is like swishing with Wasabi!

I love the Listerine commercial that just shows the guy pretending to swish and swash Listerine in his mouth while the voice-over says "Sure, it may be a little intense, but you can do it!"

I wonder, if he really is using Listerine, why his eyes aren't watering.

Scope is far from being Listerine. Talk to your dentists about the big differences between the two.

Now Listerine claims to have a flavor that's less "intense". Wonder if less intense means less effective.

Agreed.
Listerine is great for your teeth.
My point about Scope is that it also contains alcohol, and it does not burn like Listerine, therefore the burnign caused by Listerine cannot be atributed to alcohol.

I prefer Listerine over Scope. If you like pain, try rinsing your mouth out with hot water after using Listerine. :D

it probably hurts because:

A. the people who makes listerine think its a good way to make people believe that it is working, so that they wont wonder "is this really doing anything" so they will increase profit

B. the chemicals is doing its thing

C. All of the above.

Im going with C :)

I remember back in high school we did some tests on anti bacterial agents. We made up some auger and grew bacteria and tested which products did the best job. Listerine did really well, better than anti bacterial soap. Also, I don't think Scope has the ADA stamp of approval.

Winnar!

it is the anti-septics in it that hurt.

sounds logical to me, there's probably some additive that makes it extra "spicy" for listerine.

I never really used Listerine or any mouthwash before, but does it help any in whitening teeth? I know it kills tons of germs, but how bout whitening?

Try H2O2 for that.

Eucalyptol
Methyl Salicylate

I have the orange citrus flavor in my bathroom that I use everyday and it's just as effective as the non-flavored stuff.

one morning i ate something spicy, and afterwards i used listerin, i walked away from the bathroom to get my sonicare from my room, and suddenly BURN!!! i at first though, no i gotta do 30 seconds. I gave up in about 10 seconds, it was too much, even after spitting it out, i still felt the burn.

cliffnote: don't eat spicy food and use listerine afterwards.
