Why does Milk go bad faster in NYC?

Anyone in this area knows what I'm talking about. Whenever you buy milk in New York, it has two dates on the container, with the date labeled "In NYC" being 3 days earlier.

Should I be worried about a quart I bought last week which only has 1 date? Tastes a little off I think it's because it's 1% (they didn't have any 2% that day in smaller than gallon size).

I'm guessing the municipality has stricter rules on whatever is used to gauge milk freshness... so the date has to be earlier.
Edit: Yes, you should be worried about the 1-date container. Having drunk it, you will die.

Has nothing to do with the milk going bad, and everything to do with politics. I'm pretty sure that the dairy association got the law in place so that they could sell more milk. Maybe the grocery lobby. Whatever.

sour milk will NOT hurt you or make you sick, it just tastes different than you are used to

as long as you can get it down, go for it

Yup, there are recipes that specifically call for soured milk.

I personally wouldn't drink it if you have to chew it...that's just wrong.

they did news article on this before, stores in ny leaves it out and that shortens the life of milk.. some milk sits out in summer heat !!!, its weird, in CT the milk spoils 2-3 days before expiration date and it smells like crap.. u need to smell and check before drinking it..

The closer you are to your processing plant... I always buy Wawa milk here in PA... its a dairy outfit that became the goliath convenience store operation in the PA-DE-NJ corridor... with the main pasteurizing facility just 10 miles down the road.... milk has a shelf life around here of darn near three and a half weeks

It is. Buttermilk is just milk that still contains the fat that they make butter with, IIRC. It hasn't been removed. It doesen't have anything to do with bacterias acting in the milk.
