Why does Lost Planet even come with a DVD?

I put the DVD in the tray, and run the setup. It asks if I agree to the terms. Click yes. It asks for the CD key. I type it in. Downloading. Huh? Yep, it starts downloading the entire thing through Steam. It doesn't ask if I want to download, it doesn't even ask where I want it saved to. It just starts downloading.

If that's the way it is, and it doesn't even give the option of installing from the DVD, why does it come with a DVD? Half-Life 2 pulled this same bullshit. Rather than taking 5 minutes to install, it takes literally days to install.

I'd hate to see what the installer did if you didn't have a Internet connection!

i'm guessing it detected you had steam and then downloaded.. if you didn't have steam, i'm pretty sure it would do a regular install.

That's pretty much what I was implying :)

Reminds me of CoH: OP. It wanted to download and install a patch before letting me play single player, but the DL wouldn't start. P***ed me off to no end until set my firewall to block all internet traffic by that program, then it went into offline mode and worked.

Never gave me a option. If I hand known they did that with the game I would never have bought it.

-edit due to random smiley face

not really .. the box says "Internet Brodadband connection required to play" .. and "Active Steam Account Required"

Basically, for me on 56K, it will install - then it takes about "a day" to update it

not ideal for 56k

Please suggest an alternative for me - i love my home on 2-1/2 acres in one of the most physically beautiful places on earth - at the edge of a great wilderness - yet 20 miles from DT Palm Springs

Give me 56K + freedom over my Apartment in La Jolla or Oahu + 10MB/s connect

Now .. if you have any suggestions for my current situation .. which does not involve DSL [no phone company will do it], nor Cable [roadrunner is NOT coming up my road] Wireless [because my cell phone connection is only "fair"] nor Satellite [because it cost a stupid amount and the Ping is god-awful, so forget online games] .. and the only other Wireless Connection - Flashbyte Digital - is a scam in my area and i am suing them

Now my 56K connection over netzero give me a consistent 5.0[+]kbps and i can D/L 3GB a week with IDM; ping is awesome and i can play some online games

What else do you recommend for me?

for the 21st century - except my moving

The worse offender is Bioshock.

It says it automatically downloads updates and is updating to 1.1.

It goes through a bunch of flashy windows/progress meter and still doesn't update. You have to do it manually.

stupid manual things and crappy account things that dont let you use what you want.. when you want.. because you bought it when you want... that just Suck! if is a online game like mmo.. ok that is just fine.. but all that crap in a single player game... screw it... and they do that because the so called torrenting.. i mean piracy.. but in the end.. their game is pirated anyway.. somehow... and people who get it fairly got trouble they dont really need...

"unlimited" 56K for $6.95 a month is no bargain ... believe me

Lol, I don't have any recommendations. However I live on 2 acres (previously farm land) and have access to both DSL and cable. Guess it is all about location, I'd expect someone close to Palm Springs to have better options than that.

And yea, Pingspike, it wouldn't surprise me if 56K is still a majority, but not because of location, most likely because of need. Most people on a budget who don't do anything network intensive are going to choose dial up since it meets their basic requirements. A majority of the US population is most likely within range of a given cable company at the very minimum.

i would pay $100 a month for a good net connection and i am even considering satellite [which in many ways is worse than dial-up; and has the very worst bang-for-buck] .. or even buying a notebook to leave at a friends for big D/Ls :p

But i am not going to move .. willingly .. i purchased this property 25 years ago when i *thought* we might have a chance at a connection to the modern world. But i love this rural property that is SO private and the "view" is $10,000,000] .. and i am SO close to work ... i should have better options .. i should be a multi-billionaire, i thought also [that didn't work out yet either]; i am near the end of a cul-de-sac at the base of a mountain; my house is built-into a "natural cove"- my "next door" neighbor [1/4 mile up and at the Very end of the road] can't even get cell phone service in his house due to the terrain!!

rose.gif

only *one* flaw in my plans .. as it turn out

Many people are satisfied with 56K .. if you are doing less than 1GB a week you will not be bothered at all; if you need over 3GB like i do .. well, tough sh!t for me

At ANY rate, LP installed for me from the DVD and then i updated it overnight over Steam on 56K

You could always get satellite. Or on one of those 3G wireless networks. While your signal on your phone may not be that strong, 3G might be a little better. Also they let you try it for 30 days, worth a shot.

no 3G .. i looked .. RURAL hi-desert

Beautiful and totally wild .. i can walk to 7,000' if i want .. even to 11,000' :p
-a stream runs thru the next property and we have "wild kingdom" .. i had to toss a raccoon out of my garage that was annoying my cats; we get bobcats and even mountain lion [they stink]; coyotes serenade me at night and the highway traffic i can barely hear

i am becoming a writer again .. so it is perfect

Apop get a sprint broadband card. I use em for travel and they do a hell of a better job than dial up. Nice thing about sprint is you get unlimited unlike verizon which just changed it to 5 gigs a month.
