I had this exact same problem, it turned out to be the Video card, never did understand how that caused this kind of error but it did.

Interesting. I have a Voodoo3, not that rare of a card. You just fixed it by installing with a different video card?

Just wanted to update you guys. I stuck in a 10 gig as a slave and installed Mandrake with no problems at all! That means it was the HD all along. I have Win2k on the master HD and I set it up as a dual boot.

The problem now is when I choose Linux, it says "uncompression" error or something related to an unpacking or (un)compression error. Any ideas?

It's using the Linux boot loader, I think called LILO. I will get the exact command from work tomorrow.

Hmmm, I've heard of this before. I think that the solution is a reinstall.
